Overview

Teacher evaluation systems aim to drive teacher quality in various ways but have tended to be associated with accountability systems. There is also some evidence that systems can reflect racial biases that disadvantage teachers of color. There is empirical evidence that evaluation (and feedback) can greatly improve the quality of the teacher workforce and the impact that teachers have on their students, but in most places evaluation systems are treated as a compliance exercise.

What are the limitations of the way that many evaluation systems work? What are promising next steps for districts to use teacher evaluation to support teacher quality and diversity?

The following modules help you work through those questions.

5A. Your current state

5B. Help ensure the implementation of teacher evaluation supports teacher growth
